Saturday’s prestigious and ultra-rich Diamond Mile raceday has fourteen races on the card with a total $29,680,000 in purse money offered on the day.
The main attraction is the $14m Grade I Diamond Mile for three-year-olds and upward which is expected to play a significant role in deciding the outcome of the various categories in the 2018 title honours.
A maximum field of 16 of the island’s top earners will face the starter with “diamond king”, Wayne DaCosta looking to continue his dominance, with his fourth victory. He has seven runners in the line-up, headed by the 2017 horse-of-the-year and defending champion She’s A Maneater with Omar Walker in the saddle. Also Without Exception (Javaneil Patterson), Drummer Boy (Phillip Parchment), Uncle Frank with apprentice Christopher Mamdeen, Mr Universe (Jerome Innis), Perfect Neighbour with leading rider Anthony Thomas and Hover Craft (Ruja Lahoe).
She’s A Maneater returns here after her hard fought short-head victory in the Burger King Superstakes on November 10 and she will be looking to emulate the feat of Seeking My Dream with back to back victory.
Robert Pearson’s Will In Charge failed to make it three in a row by the narrowest of margins (short-head) in the Superstakes to the “Maneater” over 2000 metres, regular rider Robert Halledeen will once again be in the saddle and when this is been decided he will surley be around.
Title chasing trainer Anthony Nunes will pin his hopes on last year’s runner-up Bigdaddykool who has been sparingly raced this season. Has one victory from four attempts and finished third in the Superstakes. Dick Cardenas will be aboard this time around and if he turns up to run, could provide his trainer with his first trainers title.
The rest of the field is made up with the likes of a trio from the stables of Patrick Lynch, Disability Charm (Prince Holder), Drone Strike (Orlando Foster), Another Bullet (Dane Dawkins). Sarah Lee (Oneil Beckford) from the barn of Gary Subratie, Chace The Great with Dane Nelson who rode the Diamond Mile winner last year from the stables of Dwight Chen, Peking Cruz (Wesley Henry) and Money Magnet (Aaron Chatrie) both from the camp of Richard Azan.
Whilst the other thirteen races on the card should produce some excitement, the big question is, can Wayne DaCosta make this fourth Diamond Mile in a row or can Will In Charge break the streak by inflicting another defeat on She’s A Maneater? Will Bigdaddykool run the race of his life and prove the spoiler? This would wrap up the Owner championship for the Trinidadian Stephan Narinesingh, taking his trainer pretty close in the trainers race.
All will be known at approximately 4:35 pm on Saturday afternoon.
