Saturday’s Supreme Ventures Limited sponsored raceday will see the 12th running of the Grade III Pick-3 Super Challenge Trophy for Native-Bred Two-Year-Olds.
The second of the three race series, in what is considered to be the two year old Triple Crown, offers a purse of $3.6m and will see eight juveniles competing over 1400 metres (7 furlongs).
The Anthony Nunes’ highly thought of Blue Pepsi Lodge – My Heartbeat bay filly Corazon, will be looking to make this three from three. Jockey Dick Cardenas will again be aboard. should not be troubled by the extended trip and although this looks her sternest test to date, she must be given a good chance to keep her unbeaten status going here.
Top Shelf from the barn of Patrick Fong, after winning the first leg in the series the Cash Pot Only One For Me Trophy, failed to spark when 6L-4th behind Corazon in Juvenile Sprint on November 10 Superday. Jockey Robert Halledeen replaces Hakeem Pottinger and a vastly improved run is anticipated and she could turn the tables on her recent conquerer.
Leading trainer Wayne DaCosta has a two prong attack as he continues his defence of his title with El Gringo (b g Northern Giant – Heart Throb). Was not disgraced in his only outing to date, when 6 3/4L-4th to Phenom over 1100 metres (5 1/2 furlongs), will have learnt a lot from that effort and with champion jockey Omar Walker retaining the ride, he should not be overlooked. Lady Blue (ch f Blue Pepsi Lodge – The Vibes Lady) ran well on November 10 when finishing 5 1/2L-3rd to Corazon in the Juvenile sprint, has leading rider Anthony Thomas in the saddle and she will give it a good shot.
Phenom (ch c Soul Warrior – Supa Lei) from the stables of Steven Todd made a winning entry on November 3 over 1100 metres in smart time of 1.06.3 and is back here to contest this graded contest. Dane Nelson will again be in the saddle and he will surely make the principals go, as he look for back to back victories.
Richard Azan’s Duke (gr c Casual Trick – Lady Macbeth) was well fancied (9-5) to open his account on last, but just failed when 1/2L-2nd to Phenom. Shane Ellis has replaced Dick Cardenas for this rich graded event and it would not surprise if he leads this field home.
The field is completed by Anthony Nunes’ Tricky One with Dane Dawkins and Juice Man with Linton Steadman in the irons.
Take Corazon to prove superior to her seven rivals and be unsaddled in the winners’ enclosure, adding the major share of this purse to her title chasing trainer Anthony Nunes’ bankroll.
